Switching hosts sounds scary — nobody wants a broken site or lost email. The good news: moving to cPanel hosting is one of the smoothest migrations there is, and if your current host also uses cPanel, it's almost entirely automatic. This guide covers both the easy done-for-you route and the manual method, and how to keep your site online the whole time.
Prefer we just do it for you?VTA Cloud migrates your site to cPanel free, with zero downtime. Most sites move the same day.
Start Free MigrationThe easy way: free managed migration
The simplest option is to let your new host handle it. When you sign up for VTA Cloud cPanel hosting, our migration team moves your websites, databases and email accounts across for you — free of charge and with zero downtime. You just open a ticket with your old host's login details, and we take it from there. Because we run standard cPanel, cPanel-to-cPanel transfers are seamless and usually finished the same day.
This is the right choice for almost everyone: no risk, no technical work, and nothing goes live until it's tested.
The manual way: migrate cPanel yourself
Prefer to do it yourself? Here's the process, step by step.
Step 1 — Set up your new cPanel account
Sign up for your new plan and add your domain in cPanel so the account is ready to receive the site. Don't change your domain's DNS yet — your site should keep loading from the old host until everything is in place.
Step 2 — Back up your current site
If your old host uses cPanel, use the Backup Wizard to download a full backup (files, databases and email). If it's a different panel, download your files over FTP and export each database from phpMyAdmin. Don't forget your email — export important mailboxes too.
Step 3 — Restore onto the new server
Upload your files to the new account with cPanel's File Manager or FTP, create a matching MySQL database and import your data with phpMyAdmin, then update your site's config file (for WordPress, that's wp-config.php) with the new database name, user and password.
Step 4 — Test before you go live
Preview your site on the new server before switching DNS, using a temporary URL or by editing your computer's hosts file. Click through key pages, submit a form and check images so you catch problems while the old site is still serving visitors.
Step 5 — Update DNS to point to the new host
Once you're happy, point your domain to the new server by updating its nameservers or A record. Keep the old account active for 24–48 hours while DNS propagates worldwide, so nobody hits a dead site during the switch.
How to avoid downtime
- Never cancel your old host first. Keep it running until the new site is tested and DNS has fully propagated.
- Lower your DNS TTL a day before you switch so the change takes effect faster.
- Migrate during quiet hours to minimise the impact if anything needs a fix.
- Match your PHP version on the new server to avoid surprises with older sites.
Will migrating hurt my SEO or Google ranking?
No — moving hosts doesn't change your domain or content, so your rankings are unaffected as long as the site stays reachable and your URLs don't change. A clean migration with no downtime is invisible to Google. If anything, moving to faster cPanel hosting on LiteSpeed and NVMe can help your rankings, since page speed is a ranking factor.
